The Georgia motto is:

"Wisdom, justice, and moderation"

The Meaning of the Georgia State Motto
The meaning of this famous motto, which was adopted in 1799, reflects the aspirations of the people. The three virtues of "Wisdom, justice, and moderation" are displayed on the pillars of strength on both the flag and the seal. On the reverse of the seal is another motto "Agriculture and Commerce" reflecting the early main source of economy. The American citizens who live in, or who come from Georgia, are referred to as Georgians.

Peach State
The official nickname alludes to delicious fruit that is abundant and makes are large contribution to the economy of the state.

Empire of the South
The Empire of the South is a highly ambitious nickname that was intended to denote intentions of the people to become both culturally distinct and to build a large-scale business enterprise.

Goober State
Goober is a colloquial word for a peanut or groundnut. Georgia is the number one peanut producing state in America. The rise of the peanut as an important agricultural product started about 10 years  before the American Civil War (1861-65).

The Buzzard State
The formal name of the Buzzard referred to is the Turkey Vulture species of bird. Buzzards are deemed to be ecologically important and as such receives special legal protections under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1918.

 

The Constitution of Georgia
The constitution of Georgia establishes the basic rights of its citizens and echoes the words and sentiments of the motto. The preamble (opening) of the constitution is as follows:

"To perpetuate the principles of free government, insure justice to all, preserve peace, promote the interest and happiness of the citizen and of the family, and transmit to posterity the enjoyment of liberty, we the people of Georgia, relying upon the protection and guidance of Almighty God, do ordain and establish this Constitution."
