The location of Jefferson City is near to the center of the state at the Missouri River, north of the the Ozark Mountains.. It is located in the Cole County although a small part of the city extends into Callaway County, Missouri.

Fact 3: The population of the capital is 43,183. It was named for U.S. President Thomas Jefferson. The Nickname of the city is "Jeff"

Fact 4: History - The earliest inhabitants of the area were the ancient, prehistoric Mound People. The Osage Native American Indian tribe later dominated the area.

Fact 5: History - The French explorers Joliet and Marquette explored the region in 1673.

Fact 6: History - Lead mines were opened in the area in 1715 leading to an influx of pioneers and settlers.

Fact 7: History - The area was explored by members of the Lewis and Clark expedition in 1804.

Fact 8: History - In 1821 Jefferson City was created specifically to serve as the state capital by the Missouri state legislature.

Fact 9: History - The famous pioneer and frontiersman Daniel Boone carved out the Boone's Lick Trail, which is now Interstate Highway 70. His son, Daniel Morgan Boone, laid out the city
